  • Where do you get your wood?

  • I buy from Michael's, Target, or donations from friends.

  • How do you burn the wood?

  • I use a wood burner made by Walnut Hollow. It comes with a bunch of different tips that make different types of marks.

  • Which tip do you use the most?

  • I use the Tapered point from Walnut Hollow. As my burner was cooling, it fell off of the table and bent into a shape that is perfect for lines, detailing, and shading!

  • Do you have any tips or pointers for beginner wood burners?

  • Personally, what worked for me was focusing first on getting my lettering down. I cared a lot about how my lettering looked. When I first started, I used fonts online and would print out the design, transfer, and burn. In the mean time, I was practicing my lettering as much as I could so that I would be able to design my own quotes and such. As for actual burning advice, I just got the Walnut Hollow wood burner with an adjustable heat setting. I like the adjustable-nature of the tool because I'm not limited to one temperature and pressure. I use the Mini-Flow point at the highest heat setting (950 degrees...woah) but I apply light pressure so there aren't any indents or deep burn marks. I go back and clean it up very carefully at the end with any other tip I think will do the job and a lower heat setting.
