Chef Judith Suzarra-Campbell
Chef Judith was born on The Coast of Venezuela called Puerto La Cruz, which has a Rich mix of African, Native American, Spanish, Italian, French, and German Culture. She grew up in a family of home cooks, all talented in different ways, little Judith learned her Families recipes. These family recipes date back centuries,utilizing fresh,simple ingredients.
Years later, Judith now 27 years old living in the Capital, Caracas Venezuela, goes about her regular daily routine. She worked as an administrator for an electronics co. besides being a home chef and part time semi pro volleyball player. She was a member of a local gym, while working out one day she sees this handsome, athletic, blue eyed, bald headed, charming, white boy named Robert From Philadelphia. She said to herself whoooa, of course in Spanish she didn't speak English at the time. Little did she know this blue eyed American fancied her as well. To make a long story short, after being married for 6 years living in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, this power couple decided to open the 1st and only Traditional Venezuelan Restaurant in Pennsylvanian in November of 2004, Called Sazon. The Restaurant was an instant success, not only with the Latin Community but with every other Ethnicity as well. Three weeks after the the grand opening of our BYOB, customers started asking " Is your cuisine prepared Gluten Free? Because I have Celiac." Our response was " Of course, why wouldn't it be ?" not realizing how much Gluten is utilized as a filler, thickener, food substitute, etc,. The point being Chef Judith doesn't use Gluten to thicken her sauces, soups, etc.
The national bread of Venezuela is made of corn not gluten. These tasty Corn patties called AREPAS are grilled to perfection by Chef Judy and stuffed with meats, cheeses, eggs, veggies and beans. Ninety percent of Sazons menu is GLUTEN FREE and when food items are fried they are fried in pure corn oil in a seperate area in seperate Gluten Free Oil.
She is true to her cuisine and does not follow trends or gimmicks. As a matter of fact, Judy often watches the Food Network and criticizes these So Called Chefs. One of her criticisms is their overuse of Flour, Butter, Lard, Salt and Bacon. Chef Judy simple states, "THEY CANT COOK!"
We are very proud of our chef at Sazon, Judy is ahead of her time with her Healthy Latin Homestyle Cuisine, which is Gluten Free,offering real Vegan and Vegetarian options. In addition, Sazon has the same highly trained kitchen staff who have worked next to Chef Judy since the beginning, eight years ago, as well as a very attentive professional wait staff led by Robert. We feel we are the Best Gluten Free Restaurant in Philadelphia by a Mile.
