ARTIST STATEMENT

My paintings are about movement. The act of painting is a physical and mental practice. I am moving my body, I am using my arms, my legs as well as my hands. I perform rituals before I start. I need to turn on music and breathe before I prepare my palette. Once I start, I paint for several hours.

The subject matter can be my unique view of nature. I see trees as characters. I am drawn to the negative space between their branches or the gleam of late afternoon light as it lands on twigs that might not otherwise be noticed. I paint flowers as an act of observation and meditation.

I also paint for the pure act of composition. I am thinking of movement and balance, color, notes, focal points, relationships between spaces rather than subject matter. I do not anticipate the finish. I immerse myself in the act of painting.
