Be Present is an app designed to encourage you reduce your screen time and get active. You can earn fit coins by reaching your screen and step goals, the more coins you have, the more you can buy. Purchase coupons, equipment, and vouchers for fun outdoor activities in the store.

Personas

These are real people in fictional scenarios adapted to the usage of this app. The scenarios help me to figure out my target audience and in which ways they would use this app.

  • Name: Bob Age: 55

    Scenarios: Bob wants to reduce the amount of time he spends on his phone but he wants to make it fun.

    Bob wants to get more steps on his Fitbit but he wishes he had more motivation to do so. He likes to compete with his family.

  • Name: Tom Age: 18

    Scenarios: Tom’s parents think he has an addiction to his phone. They said if he doesn’t stop spending 24/7 on his phone then they will take it away.

    Toms likes to play Pokemon Go with his friends but looking downat his phone while playing has caused many head bumps.

  • Name: Sarah Age: 29

    Scenarios: Sarah often mindlessly scrolls through social media even thoughshe does not care about it. She wants to fix this habit by trackingher screen time and gradually reducing it.

    Sarah wants to see her progress in a visual representation so shecan post it on facebook.

  • Name: Emma Age: 21

    Scenarios: Emma wants to put aside 3 consecutive hours each day to do herhomework without any distractions.

    After almost hitting a dog with her car, Emma decides to quit usingher phone while driving.

  • Name: Deb and Laura Age: 47

    Scenarios: Identical twins Deb and Laura are pretty much the same person.They love to compete against each other in anything andeverything.

    They want to know how much the other is on their phones to seewho can prove that they have more of a life than the other.

This is a planned out map of screens that the user would go through in the different parts of the app.

Inspiration

I gathered screenshots of apps that have a similar concept and then found apps that had interfaces that I drew inspiration from for the design of my app.

This is a clickable prototype that is as close to how the real app would work as possible.

User Testing Results

  1. 1. How many hours did you spend on your phone on yesterday?
  2. Most testers understood that to get to this step you have to click the arrow on the left side of the stat screen.

  3. 2. Did you reach your step goal on April 3rd?
  4. All testers immediately went to the month tab on the stats screen and understood that a full box meant your goal was completed.

  5. 3. You want to buy equipment within the range of coins that you have.
  6. Most testers went to the coin tab in stats instead of going to the shop icon but they eventually figured it out.

  7. 4.You want to focus on your homework for an hour so you set the focus timer.
  8. Everyone went to the timer tab and performed the task flawlessly.

  9. 5. Turn off your notifications when driving.
  10. Most people clicked around the whole app until they checked the settings where it is located.

  11. 6. See how many coins your friend Jack has collected and Challenge him to a coin battle.
  12. Everyone knew which icon lead to friends and the challenge button was self explanatory.

  13. 7. What time of day do you walk the most?
  14. Most did not know right away that they could click in the middle of the screen on the stats to see the details of the day but they eventually found it.

  15. 8. How many coins did you earn today?
  16. This task was performed flawlessly by all testers.

  17. 9. How many coins did you earn total?
  18. Some struggled with this task but others found it right away.

  19. 10. Change your screen time goal to 3 hours.
  20. Testers looked around the whole app before going to the settings button but then found it automatically.
