Assignment

To design an app that is in demand today and that is different from other apps on the market.

Planning and Research

Started by taking notes while researching the current apps on the market that are similar. We then made a process flow, which we continued to add to as we progressed through the assignment.

App Idea One-Study Buddy Finder

This app will let you find a person that has already taken the class your in or is in it currently and is doing well to help you study. It will also have study tips, and a feature to lock down your phone while you study so it does not become a distraction.

App Idea Two-Dining Hall Wait Time

This app will tell you the approximate wait times for the different lines in the dining hall. It will also include the menu for the day and if they are running out of a specific menu item.

App Idea Three-Tinder For Pets

This app will let you find a pet sitter with a personality that you think would be a good match for your pets personality. It will allow you to find a pet walker, sitter, boarding, or even a play mate for your animal.

Chosen App Project

Insulin Buddy- an app that will track blood sugar changes in type one diabetics.

Personas

5 personas of (somewhat) fictional users were created to show "average" users for the app.

Jill, 40, Mother

Jill lives a very busy life with three kids all involved in after school activities. Her youngest, Timmy, has had diabetes all his life. Sometimes she can be forgetful if her phone calendar doesn’t tell her to do something.

she is looking to be able to keep track of Timmy’s blood sugar now that he is more involved in school

she wants to receive notifications so that her son doesn’t get DKA because he has had it before

Timmy, 10, Diabetic child

Timmy has had Diabetes all his life. He is really careful with it but he has recently taken interest in sports. Due to the nature of his new busy schedule eating at normal meal times has become problematic.

wants his coach to receive notifications so that if he's at practice and his blood sugar drop he has someone to let him know

wants to know how much insulin to administer by himself now that he won’t be around his parents as much

Mr.Smith, ?, Coach

This is Coach Smith’s second year teaching and first year with a diabetic athlete on the team. He’s a little nervous about how to deal with it so that the student is safe.

wants to be able to see what snacks are appropriate and healthy for diabetics to be eating and how much of it they should be eating

wants to know when his athletes blood sugar is changing dramatically so he can pull him aside quickly to help

Mrs. Myers, ??, School Nurse

The school’s nurses office recently lost a nurse so they are understaffed. This has been making it difficult for the nurse to keep track of everyones health.

wants access to diabetic student’s blood sugar readings so she can pull them out of class if she sees anything out of the ordinary.

wants to have the ability to see what other medications the student has taken that day so she knows what to do next in the event of a student needing assistance.

Annie, 13, newly diagnosed

Annie was just diagnosed with type one diabetes. She has no clue how to handle it or what to do. She needs to know when to eat, how much to eat, and how much insulin in inject. She needs all around guidance.

wants to have a diet guide

needs notifications for when her blood sugar is changing because she is new to this whole diabetes thing

Functionality

  1. Intended for parents of small children with Diabetes
  2. create a profile so it can be logged on to from different devices easily and save data
  3. will send notifications if blood sugar is outside of person’s normal range
  4. will keep a log of every reading from insulin pump so you can see potential patterns later on
  5. will recommend amount of insulin to administer based on person’s readings
  6. can keep track of meals you log in and calorie count
  7. push notifications will come from app to person’s phone but others can “sign up” to get notifications texted to their phone to inform them of changes in blood sugar.
  8. option for “early alert” which will let you know when it thinks your blood sugar is starting to drop or rise up quicker than it should be.
  9. possibly a school nurse option where it will send notifications to the school nurse only during specified hours so that they can be prepared for a potential student visit to the nurse's office
  10. also has an option to log any times another medication was taken to watch how it can affect blood sugar levels healthy food suggestions and portions for when blood sugar levels drop
  11. will notify hospital in the event that it drop dangerously low or dangerously high without the person realizing it’s going on
  12. has guidebook for parents of newly diabetic children
  13. also can keep track of the last time pump site was changed

Process Flow

Based on class discussion, we revised our original process flow and added process flows based on assigned scenarios.

Wireframes

Designed wireframes/mockups that met certain requirements. Made revisions, then finalized the mockups for desktop and mobile.

First Version

Second Version

User Testing

For Timmy’s mum

  1. Create a parent profile and link it to Timmy’s account
  2. Sign up for parent alerts for every time TImmy’s blood sugar is low

For Timmy

  1. allow notifications to certain people such as mum and coach
  2. calculate how much insulin to take if he weighs 120 lbs and ate approximately 30 grams of carbs

For Coach Smith

  1. Sign up for alerts for student athletes blood sugar levels only during the hours of practices and games.
  2. access nutritional pages and find snacks that would also be good for all of the athletes to be consuming so the one diabetic one doesn’t feel left out.

For the Nurse Myers

  1. sign up for access to students blood sugar readings during school hours only
  2. request access to the medications the students are logging into the app for that day

For Annie

  1. access the diet guide to see if current diet is working or if some changes need to be made
  2. Changes the settings to get more notifications that average until she gets the hang of checking her blood sugar

Once the test site was complete, I tested the following with a group of individuals ranging from basic to moderate internet and phone usage.

  1. One of the main problems I noticed was that the people testing the app didn't know where to do to make a new profile for the app
  2. generally a problem with the symbols and layout used
  3. another problem was users skipping over buttons too quickly.

Design Elements

Next I worked on a color scheme, Logo, and App Icon for the App. This is the final decision

Mockups

after user testing took place I made revisions to the wireframes

User Testing 2.0

User testing was then repeated based on the changes made to the wireframes.

  1. I didn't notice any glaring problems besides maybe needing the title of each page somewhere to make it easier on the user
